Polonnaruwa Vatadage, Polonnaruwa

Monument · Hidden Gem · Ruin
See the ancient structure of Polonnaruwa Vatadage, built to hold a relic of the Buddha's tooth and the alms bowl he used. At the center of the circular building with concentric terraces, you can see a seated Buddha. Belonging to Polonnaruwa period, the most striking stone work in the monument comes from guard stone and moonstone. Historians believe ornamental elements at the monument's entrance represent the cycle of Samsara in Buddhism. Spare a though for the many local people who have managed to preserve the site in near-perfect condition.
