Pidurangala Rock, Sigiriya

#2 of 16 in Things to do in Sigiriya
Hike up Pidurangala Rock, a geological feature offering extensive views of the verdant hilly landscape and an atmosphere of seclusion and contemplation. Standing opposite a larger, more frequented hill, the rock possesses a different charm to its touristy brother, with a quiet and peaceful Buddhist temple at its foot, and a giant reclining Buddha statue in a secluded cave part way up. The ascent takes around half an hour, with a medium difficulty scramble over some boulders near the top, so wear suitable footwear. The views from the top make the exertion worthwhile. For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Sigiriya holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Pidurangala Rock and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Super good alternative if you the price of the Sigiriya rock, like us, also so ridiculously high. You have wonderful views of the lions rock, which otherwise you do not have these rock itself climbs, and t costs next to nothing!! In addition, it is a lot less touristy so we were almost the only at the top! (1 other couple and 1 someone only) ... the only thing we found was that there are 2 dogs layers at the top of the top. they looked lousy, which ensured that the magical atmosphere felt a little less magical ... but definitely recommended!!!!

  • This rock sits close to the hill fort of Sigiraya and is a fraction of the charge to assent to the viewing vantage points. The final climb is suitable for the most able and steady footed. Doug and Jul...  more »

  • A great hike and worth it for the amazing view from the top. Can reach the peak less than 1 hour But its exhausting if you try it close to noon. Best to climb in the evening.🌅
  • Great view on top. People make out as if the last bit of the climb is merely a matter of there not being steps. It's harder than that, not in the sense of being strenuous, but you need to be fit and sufficiently flexible. Wouldn't recommend to the average person over 60.
  • Well worth the climb which is challenging at the end in a fun way, nothing to extreme but you definitely need to be fit to get to the top because your climbing rocks not stairs. The view is simply amazing especially early in the morning.you for a nice 360 degrees view also of the more famous Sigiriya rock. It cost only 500 rupees as a donation. It was not crowded at all. Would recommend a visit.
  • Awesome view, climb is not too hard and gets a wee bit tricky at the end but only for the last bit. Make sure you have something to cover shoulders and knees for the entrance which is at the temple below! The ticket seller did not mind shorts but did mind skirts that were very short.
  • The temple was constructed on a massive rock called Pidurangala,Not in the top of the rock but a very calm and safe place in the middle part of the rock. which is located a few kilometers north of the historical fort Sigiriya. I would like to call it A nature lovers paradise .
