Fort Frederick, Trincomalee

3.6
Landmark · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
The walls of Fort Frederick protect two temples and offer excellent views of the coastline. Initially constructed by the Portuguese, and later rebuilt by the Dutch, the fort offers sights of miscellaneous artillery, a Gokana temple, and a rebuilt Koneswaram temple, as well as some spotted deer roaming the military camp. On your way from Gokana temple to Kneswaram temple, admire the Georgian-style mansion of Wellesley Lodge, which dates back to the 1700s. You can’t enter the mansion, but the exterior makes it worth a visit. As the Sri Lankan army uses the fortress as a military camp, ask before you take any photos of military personnel or buildings. Finally, climb up Swami Rock for some great views. To visit Fort Frederick on your trip to Trincomalee, use our Trincomalee tour itinerary maker app.

  • Its a Dutch fort since 1673 located in Trincomalee. And the views from swami Rock is very beautiful.
  • Take the 1km walk and see peacocks, deer and monkeys as you go through the military building along a beautifully kept road with huge trees that provide shade. Very nice temple(they charge a small amount to look after your shoes) and give you a wrap if your knees or shoulders are showing.
