After the city's medieval castle was destroyed by fire, Royal Palace was built in the same spot and has served as the king's residence since the 18th century. Located in the city's old town area, this castle has over 600 rooms and five museums. Following the destructive palace fire of 1697, the current structure was built by architect Nicodemus Tessin in 1754. Tour the palace grounds and buildings to see its 18th- and 19th-century interiors, museums, and royal costumes. Many visitors like to catch the changing of the guard ceremony, which has been a tradition since 1523. Nice complex, and well preserved for obvious reasons: The Royal line is unbroken, Sweden was not involved in wars in the XX century, and it's very much a "lived in" palace. Actually the most modern room, which can be seen but alas not entered, is one of the mist intriguing. Do take the free audio guide, it's well thought out and provides the proper historical framework.
My son and my brother and his son enjoyed watching the changing of the guard. It is not as spectacular as the ceremony at Buckingham Palace, but then again it is done the Swedish way, a more modest affair that is more understated. We enjoyed seeing it and I would recommend it as being worthwhile.
