Basel Minster, Basel

4.6
Situated on a hill above the Rhine River, the medieval Basel Minster remains one of the city's major landmarks, its duo of slim towers a dominant feature in the Old Town's skyline. Erected gradually between 1019 and 1500, the building combines the finest elements of the Romanesque and Gothic styles, its colored roof tiles visible from distant corners of the city. Inside you can see a 19th-century lectern carved out of sandstone and a crypt containing the tombs of Basel's early bishops. For a bird's-eye view of the city, the river, and the Black Forest in the distance, climb the church's southern tower. • Beautiful church interiors, a bit dark, but well kept and with a large organ. It overlooks the Rhine River from the back. Beautiful overlooking the square

  • Beautiful and impressive from the outside ... very bare inside ... Expecting mosaics and many ornaments from a cathedral, especially when the most important in the city. But instead you see bare and drab inside! Beautiful astronomical clock!

  • It is a Protestant cathedral with two towers very slender, admission is free and it is buried Erasmo de Rotterdam. Very interesting

  • Beautiful! I fell in love with it when I first moved here, and now, nearly two years later, I'm just as smitten! I see it everyday when I cross Mittlerebrücke and wouldn't know what to do with my eyes if it were somehow gone! I've been to the top several times and enjoy it very much. Totally worth the hype as a Basel "must-see"!
  • Climb the tower for a breathtaking view over Basel and the surroundings. Be aware of at times medieval security standards though.
  • A charming cathedral, there will be a cute Christmas market there if you visit it in December.
  • Beautiful tall church towering over the city heights...
  • An impressive building indeed!

Where to stay in Basel

Business-oriented Basel offers an overwhelming amount of mid-range hotels catering to its business clientele. The city fills up during conferences and events, so be sure to plan accordingly. There are a number of guesthouses and bed and breakfasts too, but they tend to be pretty pricey. You'll find a handful of budget-friendly hostels just south of the city core. Keep in mind that as you move toward the outskirts of town for affordable accommodation, proximity to the train stations will be key. The good news is that a number of the hotels include public transport passes with the cost of a room.
