#3 of 27 in Museums in Basel
Museum Tinguely houses a permanent exhibit of the works of the museum's namesake, Swiss painter and sculptor Jean Tinguely. The museum is also home to temporary exhibits, which generally display works from Tinguely's friends and peers. Modern artists like Bernhard Luginbuhl, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Yves Klein have also displayed works here. In addition to Tinguely's kinetic sculptures, the museum displays illustrations, photographs, and documents pertaining to the artist's personal life and work. The moving mechanical installations attract both kids and adults alike. Put Museum Tinguely on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Basel trip itinerary planning app .

  • Located just next to Roche, this Museum designed by Botta makes you enter the mind of an artist absolutely brilliant and revolutionary. A must-have for everyone. But if Tinguely was against imposing monuments and structures because entrust the Museum a pop?

  • Given that I'm not an admirer of modern art, wandering the halls of this bizarre Museum, I only saw strange assemblages of objects that looked more put together by a junk dealer who by artists; tral'altro, having them equipped with automatism that li "animated" by pressing buttons with your feet, not made them further to understand. The machine-cloaca, cumbersome mechanism that simulates human digestion with smelly bowel movements, should cistituire the highlight of this site but to me and to most of those present raised only disgust and dismay. It is complemented with a serious of salt where it goes from drawings made by child of Mr. Delvoye (anything more than normal) to videos on his delusional reconstruction in the desert of "end of the world" with explosives of various types. If you want to see a true artist, changed Museum and go to that of cartons.

  • The Tinguely museum is easy to get to (it has its own bus stop) and takes about an hour to visit. The eponymous Swiss artist's kinetic sculptures, largely built from found items, are presented with fo...  more »

  • A fascinating museum/art gallery. Tinguely's moving art is unique and mesmerizing. The only downside is that once a piece of art is activated, it takes about 4 minutes to reset, so the waiting can be difficult for kids.
  • Loved this museum. Not typical even for a modern art museum. We spent about an hour there, the guide was very knowledgeable regarding the artist and each of the art works.
  • Very nice place to visit, excellent art work. Small museum so you don't take too much time to see everything. A bit expensive but nothing too high
  • This is a good place for historicl views.
  • A must for anyone interested in modern art and visiting Basel.

Where to stay in Basel

Business-oriented Basel offers an overwhelming amount of mid-range hotels catering to its business clientele. The city fills up during conferences and events, so be sure to plan accordingly. There are a number of guesthouses and bed and breakfasts too, but they tend to be pretty pricey. You'll find a handful of budget-friendly hostels just south of the city core. Keep in mind that as you move toward the outskirts of town for affordable accommodation, proximity to the train stations will be key. The good news is that a number of the hotels include public transport passes with the cost of a room.
