Near the confluence of the Chikuma and Sai rivers, Nagano combines historic sites with nearby forested alps dotted with shrines.
Explore Nagano's surroundings by going to Ueda Castle (in Ueda), Daio Wasabi Farm (in Azumino) and Yamanouchi-machi (Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park & Shigakogen Sun Valley Ski Area). There's lots more to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Togakushi Shrine Okusha, indulge in Japan's hot spring tradition at some of the top local onsens, take in the dramatic scenery at Shiraito Falls, and take in the pleasant sights at Matsumoto Castle.

To see photos and other tourist information, read our Nagano road trip website.

If you are flying in from The Netherlands, the closest major aiports are Toyama Airport, Komatsu Airport and Niigata Airport. In May, daily temperatures in Nagano can reach 26°C, while at night they dip to 18°C. On the 2nd (Sun), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel back home.
