Medan, Indonesia to Sapporo is an approximately 14- hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight, bus, and train; or do a combination of flight and train. The time zone changes from Western Indonesia Time to Japan Standard Time, which is usually a 2 hour difference. Plan for much colder temperatures traveling from Medan in December, with highs in Sapporo at 0°C and lows at -2°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 2nd (Thu) so you can catch the train to Otaru.

Kick off your visit on the 2nd (Thu): look for gifts at Otaru Music Box Museum Main Building, stroll through Otaru Canal, observe the fascinating underwater world at Otaru Aquarium, then steep yourself in history at The Site of Temiya Line, and finally make a trip to JR Otaru Station.

Traveling by train from Sapporo to Otaru takes an hour. Alternatively, you can take a bus; or drive. In January in Otaru, expect temperatures between -3°C during the day and -6°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 2nd (Thu) so you can drive to Hakodate.
