Medan, Indonesia to Sapporo is an approximately 14-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train. You'll lose 2 hours traveling from Medan to Sapporo due to the time zone difference. Traveling from Medan in December, expect Sapporo to be cooler, temps between 0°C and -2°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 2nd (Thu) early enough to catch the train to Otaru.

The port city of Otaru has long attracted domestic visitors, drawn in by the city's many historic buildings, and has started to garner international attention, too.
Start off your visit on the 2nd (Thu): look for gifts at Otaru Orgel Museum Main Building, explore the activities along Otaru Canal, then meet the residents at Otaru Aquarium, then contemplate the long history of The Site of Temiya Line, and finally make a trip to JR Otaru Station.

Take a train from Sapporo to Otaru in an hour. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In January, daytime highs in Otaru are -3°C, while nighttime lows are -6°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 2nd (Thu) early enough to go by car to Hakodate.

A gateway to the island, Hakodate has gained a reputation for its waterfront attractions, its proximity to some of the island's most popular natural sites, and its seafood.
On the 3rd (Fri), take in the awesome beauty at Mount Hakodate, look for gifts at Hakodateyama Ropeway Sancho Shop, then make a trip to Hachimanzaka, then enjoy breathtaking views from Goryokaku Tower, and finally admire the landmark architecture of Goryokaku Park.

You can drive from Otaru to Hakodate in 3.5 hours. Other options are to fly; or do a combination of train and flight. In January, plan for daily highs up to 0°C, and evening lows to -6°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 4th (Sat) so you can take a train to Noboribetsu.

Start off your visit on the 4th (Sat): take in the natural beauty of Oku no Yu, then take in the dramatic natural features at Jigokudani, and then find something for the whole family at Noboribetsu Date Historic Village. You can fly from Noboribetsu to Tokyo in 5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight, taxi, and train; or do a combination of train and flight. In January, Tokyo is a bit warmer than Noboribetsu - with highs of 11°C and lows of 1°C. On the 5th (Sun), you'll travel to Osaka.
