Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Dorsoduro and Basilica Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Step off the beaten path and head to Scuola Grande di San Rocco and Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute. When in Venice, make a side trip to see Piazza dei Signori in Vicenza, approximately 1h 20 min away. There's much more to do: appreciate the extensive heritage of St. Mark's Square, take a stroll through Cannaregio, admire the striking features of Doge's Palace, and make a trip to Scala Contarini del Bovolo.
