Proud of their hometown's distinct culture and dialect, many natives of Osaka describe their city as "Japan's anti-capital." An antidote to Tokyo's hectic energy, Osaka marches to the beat of its own drum, serving as the country's longtime commercial and industrial hub.
Visit Kongobu-ji Temple and Koyasan Danjo Garan for their historical value. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Hase-dera Temple and Koyasan Reihokan Museum. Venture out of the city with trips to Horyu-ji Temple (in Ikaruga-cho) and Omiwa Shrine (in Sakurai). There's lots more to do: wander the streets of Dotonbori, steep yourself in history at Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine, take in the spiritual surroundings of Hōzen-ji Temple, and step into the grandiose world of Osaka Castle.
