Once a small fishing town, Yokohama was one of the first ports to welcome foreign trade in the 19th century, after which it grew into Japan's second largest city and a bustling metropolis.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Kiunkaku and Samukawa Shrine. Explore hidden gems such as Kencho-ji Temple and Kishamichi Promenade. Change things up with these side-trips from Yokohama: Hakone-machi (Hakone Museum of Art & The Hakone Open-Air Museum), Oyama Afuri Shrine (in Isehara) and Engaku-ji Temple (in Kamakura). Mumbai, India to Yokohama is an approximately 13-hour flight. You can also do a combination of car and ferry. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 3.5 hours traveling from Mumbai to Yokohama. Prepare for much colder weather when traveling from Mumbai in December: high temperatures in Yokohama hover around 14°C and lows are around 6°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 10th (Tue) so you can travel to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Get some historical perspective at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Jojakkoji Temple and Sanzen-in Temple. The adventure continues: take in the spiritual surroundings of Shimogamo Jinja, steep yourself in history at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, and step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle.

Traveling by combination of subway and train from Yokohama to Kyoto takes 3 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or drive. December in Kyoto sees daily highs of 13°C and lows of 4°C at night. On the 14th (Sat), you'll travel to Nara.

The country's first established capital, Nara houses some of the most storied buildings and natural attractions in Japan, with eight World Heritage Sites in total.
On the 15th (Sun), take in the spiritual surroundings of Toshodai-ji Temple, get engrossed in the history at Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Horyu-ji Temple, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Hase-dera Temple, and finally take an in-depth tour of Kofuku-ji Temple National Treasure Hall. Drive from Kyoto to Nara in an hour. Alternatively, you can take a train. In December, plan for daily highs up to 13°C, and evening lows to 6°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 16th (Mon) to allow enough time to drive to Takayama.

Drive from Nara to Takayama in 4 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. Traveling from Nara in December, expect Takayama to be slightly colder, temps between 9°C and 3°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 19th (Thu) to allow enough time to drive to Tokyo.

Traveling from Takayama in December, you will find days in Tokyo are somewhat warmer (14°C), and nights are about the same (4°C). On the 22nd (Sun), you'll have the morning to explore before heading back home.
