The largest and most populous city in New Zealand, Auckland combines a rich history and thriving contemporary culture in an abundance of museums, art galleries, and performance venues.
Relax by the water at Piha Beach and Browns Bay Beach. Escape the urban bustle at Waiheke Island and Cheltenham Beach. Change things up with a short trip to Stockade Hill in Howick (about 30 minutes away). There's much more to do: make a trip to SkyTower, learn about all things military at Auckland Museum, get impressive views of Rangitoto Island, and look for gifts at Pauanesia.

Surrounded by lakes and featuring impressive areas of geothermal landscape, the city of Rotorua offers an otherwordly landscape and a welcoming, peaceful environment, with the culture of the native Maori people very much in the foreground.
Visit Te Puia and Whakarewarewa - The Living Maori Village for their historical value. Visiting Huka Falls Walkway and Zipline will get you outdoors. Get out of town with these interesting Rotorua side-trips: Taupo (Kinloch Beach & Souvenir Outlet & Mountain Bike Hire). There's still lots to do: take in the natural beauty of Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, explore the activities along Lake Rotokakahi, steep yourself in history at Buried Village of Te Wairoa, and pause for some serene contemplation at St Michael's Catholic Church.

You can drive from Auckland to Rotorua in 3 hours. Other options are to take a bus; or do a combination of flight and bus. Expect little chillier evenings in Rotorua when traveling from Auckland in February, with lows around 19°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 11th (Tue) to allow time to travel to Whakapapa.
