Iriomote-jima

Taketomicho Iriomote-Jima stands as the second largest island in Okinawa.
On the 6th (Wed), head off the coast to Iriomote Island and then scramble along the landscape with a canyoning and rapelling tour. On the 7th (Thu), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: enjoy the sand and surf at Ida no Hama Beach and then add some adventure to your tour with a kayaking and canoeing tour.

A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
You'll enjoy a bit of beach vacationing at Sunayama Beach and Toguchi no Hama. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Aragusuku Beach and Yabiji. The adventure continues: see some colorful creatures with a scuba or snorkeling tour, enjoy the sand and surf at Yonaha Maehama Beach, enjoy the sea views from Higashi Hennazaki Lighthouse, and snap pictures at Kurima Bridge.

Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Yamato Museum and Senjokaku. Step off the beaten path and head to Daishoin Temple and JMSDF Kure Museum. Get out of town with these interesting Hiroshima side-trips: Hatsukaichi (Itsukushima Shrine, Itsukushima Shrine Torii, &more). There's still lots to do: take an in-depth tour of Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, steep yourself in history at Peace Memorial Park - Hiroshima, and see the interesting displays at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.

You can do a combination of flight and train from Miyakojima to Hiroshima in 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or do a combination of flight and ferry. Expect slightly colder temperatures when traveling from Miyakojima in May; daily highs in Hiroshima reach 28°C and lows reach 18°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 13th (Wed) early enough to catch the train to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Step off the beaten path and head to Toji and Chion-in Temple. Get some historical perspective at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Nijo Castle. There's much more to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Kinkaku-ji, contemplate the long history of Sanjusangendo Temple, explore the historical opulence of Osaka Castle, and make a trip to Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

Getting from Hiroshima to Kyoto by train takes about 2 hours. Other options: drive; or take a bus. In May, daytime highs in Kyoto are 29°C, while nighttime lows are 17°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 16th (Sat) early enough to catch the train to Kanazawa.

An old castle town largely unspoiled during World War II, Kanazawa features well-preserved architecture spread across a range of districts.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Daihonzan Eihei-ji Temple and Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. Visit Ainokura Gassho Community and Higashichaya Old Town for their historical value. Get out of town with these interesting Kanazawa side-trips: Shirakawa-mura (Shirakawago Gassho Zukuri Minkaen & The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go Gassho Style Houses), Chirihama Nagisa Driveway (in Hakui) and Gokayama (in Nanto).
