Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.

Surabaya, Indonesia to Tokyo is an approximately 11-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train. Traveling from Surabaya to Tokyo, you'll lose 2 hours due to the time zone difference. In January, Tokyo is cooler than Surabaya - with highs of 11°C and lows of 1°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 10th (Fri) so you can travel to Kyoto.

Explore Kyoto's surroundings by going to Osaka (Universal Studios Japan & Osaka Castle). Next up on the itinerary: steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, take in the pleasant sights at Arashiyama, take in the spiritual surroundings of Sanjusangendo Temple, and explore the historical opulence of Nijo Castle.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or drive. In January in Kyoto, expect temperatures between 10°C during the day and 1°C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 14th (Tue) early enough to catch the train to Hiroshima.

Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Kintaikyo Bridge and Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims. Explore Hiroshima's surroundings by going to Momijidani Park (in Miyajima), Yamato Museum (in Kure) and Hatsukaichi (Itsukushima Shrine, Itsukushima Shrine Torii, & more). There's still lots to do: pause for some photo ops at The Cenotaph, make a trip to Peace Memorial Park - Hiroshima, take in nature's colorful creations at Shukkei-en Garden, and see the interesting displays at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.

You can take a train from Kyoto to Hiroshima in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Expect a daytime high around 11°C in January, and nighttime lows around 2°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 18th (Sat) early enough to travel to Motobu-cho.

Formed by the gradual merging of several old fishing villages, today the island town of Motobu-cho boasts paradisal beaches of white sand, clear waters, and a rich array of wildlife.
Explore hidden gems such as Okinawa Memorial Park Ocean Expo Park and Daisekirinzan. Get out of town with these interesting Motobu-cho side-trips: Cape Hedo (in Kunigami-son) and Sefa-Utaki (in Nanjo). The adventure continues: contemplate the long history of Nakijin Castle Ruins, observe the fascinating underwater world at Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, don't miss a visit to Bise no Fukugi Tree Road, and meet the residents at Okichan Theater.

You can do a combination of flight and bus from Hiroshima to Motobu-cho in 7 hours. Other options are to do a combination of train, flight, and bus; or do a combination of train and ferry. Expect somewhat warmer temperatures when traveling from Hiroshima in January; daily highs in Motobu-cho reach 22°C and lows reach 13°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 21st (Tue) so you can travel to Miyakojima.

A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.

You can do a combination of bus and flight from Motobu-cho to Miyakojima in 4.5 hours. Traveling from Motobu-cho in January, plan for a bit warmer nights in Miyakojima, with lows around 19°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 25th (Sat) so you can catch the ferry to Iriomote-jima.

Iriomote-jima

Taketomicho Iriomote-Jima stands as the second largest island in Okinawa.
Kick off your visit on the 26th (Sun): skim along the rocks with a canyoning and rapelling tour and then take in the dramatic scenery at Pinaisara Falls.
