Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Old Town and Munich Residenz. Visit St. Peter's Church and Nymphenburg Palace for their historical value. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Munich: Schloss Neuschwanstein (in Schwangau) and Pilgrimage Church of Wies (in Steingaden).
