Well-known for the beautiful views of its famous Promenade des Anglais waterfront, Nice is an ethnically-diverse coastal port city on the French Riviera and the fifth most populated city in France.
Museum-lovers will get to explore Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and Musée Matisse. Vieille Ville and La Croisette are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Venture out of the city with trips to Eglise de Biot (in Biot), Chapelle Des Pénitents Blancs (in St-Paul-de-Vence) and Rue d'Antibes (in Cannes). The 2013 European "Capital of Culture," Marseille is the largest port city on the breezy Mediterranean coast and the second largest city in France.
Visit Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde and Paroisse Cathédrale Saint Sauveur Aix-en-Provence for their historical value. Do some cultural sightseeing at Basilique Sainte-Marie-Madeleine and Foundation Vasarely. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Marseille: Clos Sainte Magdeleine (in Cassis), Domaine CROIX ROUSSE (in Puget-Ville) and Aix-en-Provence (Cours Mirabeau, Granet Museum, & more). And it doesn't end there: examine the collection at Site Memorial du Camp des Milles, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Abbaye Saint-Victor, take a stroll through The Panier, and pause for some serene contemplation at Église Saint-Laurent.

An ancient town center surrounded by medieval ramparts, Avignon is a major city of Provence and a Mediterranean city in the Vaucluse department on the left bank of the Rhône River.
Museum-lovers will appreciate Musée Calvet and Musée Angladon. Get a sense of the local culture at Palais des Papes and Nuances du Sud. Change things up with these side-trips from Avignon: Chateauneuf-du-Pape (Vignobles Mayard, Domain du Banneret, & more), Chateau de Beaucastel (in Courthezon) and Mazan (Auberge du Vin & Le Chateau la Croix des Pins). Best known as a fortified town, Carcassonne is a walled city that provided the inspiration for the castle in Disney's "Sleeping Beauty" and the location for many scenes in Kevin Costner's movie "Robin Hood." For a daily dose of excitement, medieval jousting tournaments are held twice per day between the two walls--while this may sound like a typical touristy show, it's actually an entertaining display of combative competition and horsemanship.
Start off your visit on the 25th (Thu): explore the historical opulence of Cité de Carcassonne, then step into the grandiose world of Château Comtal, then take a stroll through Carcassonne Medieval City, and finally stop by Jeff de Bruges Carcassonne. On the 26th (Fri), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: take in the spiritual surroundings of Basilica of Saint-Nazaire, contemplate the long history of Cathar Castles, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Saint Gimer Church, then take in the architecture and atmosphere at Carcassonne Cathedral, and finally take in the architecture and atmosphere at St. Vincent's Church.
