Palm-fringed beaches with golden sand, turquoise water, and a colorful coral reef are enough to draw any beachgoer to Unawatuna, but there's plenty to do off the beach here as well.
Change things up with these side-trips from Unawatuna: Ariyapala Mask Museum (in Ambalangoda), Bentota (Bentota Beach & Sea Turtle Protection Association) and Hikkaduwa (Hikkaduwa Beach, Community Tsunami Museum, &more). There's much more to do: enjoy the sand and surf at Jungle Beach, steep yourself in history at Galle Fort, indulge in some personalized pampering at some of the best spas, and stop by Lak Gems & Jewellery.

For where to stay, traveler tips, maps, and more tourist information, read our Unawatuna day trip planner.

Colombo to Unawatuna is an approximately 2- hour train ride. You can also take a bus; or drive. In September, plan for daily highs up to 36°C, and evening lows to 30°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 12th (Thu) so you can catch the train back home.
