Often referred to as the "Belly Button of Japan," the city of Shibukawa celebrates its status as the country's geographical center by hosting the Heso Matsuri, or Belly Button Festival.
Kick off your visit on the 19th (Thu): steep yourself in history at Tomioka Silk Mill and then examine the collection at Konnyaku Park. Here are some ideas for day two: soak in some Japanese tradition at some of the top local onsens, admire the sheer force of Fukiwarenotaki Falls, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Mizusawaji, and finally get to know the fascinating history of Ikaho Stone Steps.

Plan my trip to Shibukawa with suggested itineraries provided by Inspirock.

Chiang Mai, Thailand to Shibukawa is an approximately 16.5-hour combination of flight and car. You can also drive. The time zone changes from Indochina Time (ICT) to Japan Standard Time (JST), which is usually a 2 hour difference. Traveling from Chiang Mai in December, you will find days in Shibukawa are cooler (11°C), and nights are slightly colder (8°C). Finish your sightseeing early on the 20th (Fri) so you can drive to Kusatsu-machi.
