Surrounded by lakes and featuring impressive areas of geothermal landscape, the city of Rotorua offers an otherwordly landscape and a welcoming, peaceful environment, with the culture of the native Maori people very much in the foreground.
We've included these beaches for you: Mt Maunganui Main Beach and Kinloch Beach. Popular historic sites such as Buried Village of Te Wairoa and Ohinemutu are in your itinerary. Get out of town with these interesting Rotorua side-trips: Hobbiton Movie Set (in Hinuera) and Taupo (Huka Falls tracks, Huka Honey Hive, & more). There's lots more to do: take in the natural beauty of Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, make a trip to Te Puia, steep yourself in history at Whakarewarewa - The Living Maori Village, and trot along with a tour on horseback.

Waitomo Caves

Head deep beneath the surface of the earth at Waitomo Caves, a village and cave system that draws both extreme sports enthusiasts and those wanting something a little more relaxed.
Get in touch with nature at Waitomo Glowworm Caves and Caveworld. Step out of Waitomo Caves with an excursion to Hamilton Gardens in Hamilton--about 1h 10 min away. There's lots more to do: get a new perspective on things with Boat Tours & Water Sports, take in the dramatic scenery at Marokopa Falls Walk, skim along the rocks with a canyoning and rapelling tour, and get outside with Waitomo Clay Birds.

Wellington Cable Car and Old St Paul's will appeal to history buffs. Visiting Great Alpine Highway and Queen Charlotte Track will get you outdoors. Step out of Wellington to go to Waikanae and see Peka Peka Beach, which is approximately 1h 20 min away. There's lots more to do: see the interesting displays at Museum of New Zealand (Te Papa Tongarewa), explore the activities along Oriental Bay, take in nature's colorful creations at Wellington Botanic Garden, and enjoy the sand and surf at Days Bay.

With its history proudly stemming from the Scottish settlers who came here during the colonial era, Dunedin's streets are lined with well-preserved examples of Victorian and Edwardian architecture, while a new culture of nightlife and fine dining takes hold around them.
Step out of the city life by going to Waikouaiti Beach and Otago Peninsula. Visit Aramoana Beach and Dunedin Beach for some beach relaxation. Change things up with a short trip to Nugget Point/Tokata Walks in Balclutha (about 1h 55 min away). Spend the 16th (Sun) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. The adventure continues: contemplate the long history of Larnach Castle & Gardens, ride with the locals on Dunedin Railway Station, pause for some serene contemplation at First Church of Otago, and examine the collection at Toitu Otago Settlers Museum.
