Chimaera, Cirali

#2 of 7 in Things to do in Cirali
At Chimaera, see the natural phenomenon of eternal flames leaping from the cracks in the mountain, which most likely inspired the myth of the ancient Greek monster of the same name. According to Homer's Iliad, the hero Bellerophon fought the fire-spitting hybrid of snake, lion, and goat on this very site. The constantly burning fires are caused by natural gasses like methane that spew from the rock. Walk from the park to the top of the "burning stone," past flaming gas vents to the remains of a temple dedicated the Greek god of fire. Wear hiking shoes, and be sure to bring a flashlight or headlamp if you'll be hiking in the dark. Inspirock's itinerary builder makes planning a Cirali trip simple and quick.
