Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) chronicles two hundred years of history, from the Native American culture, the Spanish Empire frontier and the Mexican Republic, to maritime history, the California Gold Rush, the evolution of American coastal fortifications, and the growth of urban San Francisco. To find out how to plan a trip to San Francisco, use our trip itinerary maker.
The Golden Gate National Recreation Area was established in 1972 as a new urban park. A timely merging of political, economic, social and environmental forces, occurring in both the Bay Area and the country, paved the way for the creation of the park. The park’s very existence illustrates the power of the environmental conservation movement in the 1960s and 1970s.

Welcome centre is a good place to stop off, there is a nice view of the bridge from San Francisco side. more »
I love the Golden Gate Bridge. The welcome centre is located directly on the end of the bridge. There is car parking available here and it is only a short walk until you are on the bridge itself. It also provides a fantastic place to take photos. The welcome centre is full of helpful staff and awesome mementos to remind you of your visit to this landmark. Highly recommended.
This place is so amazing especially for photo opportunities as well as just enjoying the beautiful weather. The trick is to not park at the actual welcome center but go down the hill a little bit and then take the trail down to the pier. Or drive all the way down the hill to get to the pier overall great place to go for just hanging out and the gift shop isn't enormous but decently sized and has a variety of relics.
