  • The Pet Cemetery in the Presidio neighbourhood is the ultimate resting place for hundreds of furry, scaly, feathered companions who faithfully served the military families who lived in the neighborhood years ago when it was an Army outpost. Before their deaths, dear pets, like Skipper, "the best dog we ever had", brought stability and lightness to a life that included frequent movements and often the threat of war. What Better way to honor this role than a permanent plot of half an acre on a hillside overlooking the Bay of San Francisco and a solemn sign with hand letters that says, "The love these animals have given will never be forgotten"? Dogs and cats claim the largest number of 424 lovingly handcrafted tombstones of the cemetery. Beloved birds, rodents and reptiles are buried here too, along with fish that have been spared the burial ignobility and a pet known simply as "Mr. Iguana". Names, dates and feelings are stamped or carved in wood or engraved in stone. Some markers are embellished with hand-made portraits. The face of "Our Best Friend Sammi"-a cat that has survived almost 20 years of nomadic military life-is immortalized in porcelain and inserted into a bronze plate. Although His exact beginning has not been documented by the Army, newspapers have published a story beginning in the early 50 years. Led by Lieutenant Colonel Swing, 6th Army Commander, post engineers designed and landscaped the area at the foot of McDowell Avenue, adjacent to the Calvary Stables. Over the years, the cemetery occasionally fell into disuse just to be resumed as someone's cause-a strong testimony of the human-animal bond. Although It is not a contributing resource for the status of the National Historic District of Presidio, the Presidio Trust is committed to preserving this special place.

  • Really very curious, a real cemetery for small pets and pet ... We knew of his existence after seeing the various points of the garrison but we only passed especially for the curiosity. We say cute but if you don't have time ...

  • This place does exist! Was created for military families who had pets while The Presidio was an active US military base and needed a place to bury their deceased pets. There are tombstones. Looks like the last time a pet was buried here was early 1980s.
  • A stumbled across this hidden gem after hiking through the national cemetery which had been fenced off and looks like there was a construction project going on around it. Quite a bit of care had been taken to preserve the cemetery which was a really bittersweet reminder of how much we love our fury friends.
