Tenderloin Museum, San Francisco

4.8
Tenderloin Museum celebrates the rich history of one of San Francisco's most overlooked neighborhoods. Through history exhibitions, resident-led walking tours, community programs, and the presentation of original artwork, the Tenderloin Museum invites all comers to learn about the roots of our dynamic neighborhood, and reclaim our city's past and future. The 31 blocks of the Tenderloin District are a microcosm of San Francisco, peopled by immigrants and iconoclasts, artists and activists, sinners and saints. All are welcome to join us in telling its story.

  • Great "museum" dedicated to the place most maligned in San Francisco, the Tenderloin (or TL). However, the TL has a fascinating history which this place intends to present and illuminate. Rotating exhibits, performance artists, guest lecturers and more (my class at City College had one class presented there) contribute to the LIFE of the TL and if this museum. A "don't miss" when visiting SF if you want to go beyond the routine tourist traps.
  • Excellent, succinct museum that you can finish within an hour or two. Be sure to call ahead or note online that you want a tour. The daytime tour with Gail Seagraves was a fun, informative experience that made me feel safer in the tenderloin and more interested in its history and present. Be sure to bring cash for a tip and great banh mi ($4!) or other culinary options (you'll pass Ethiopian, Thai, Vietnamese, and other restaurants).
