The Flood Building is a 12-story highrise located at 870 Market Street on the corner of Powell Street in the downtown shopping district of San Francisco, California completed in 1904 and designed by Albert Pissis. Situated on Powell and Market streets, next to the Powell Street cable car turntable, Hallidie Plaza and the Powell Street Bart Station entrance, it is one of the few structures that survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The site formerly housed Baldwin's Hotel and Theatre, which was destroyed by fire in 1898. It was later purchased by James L. Flood, who constructed the building as a tribute to his father, James Clair Flood (1826-1889, the Comstock Lode millionaire). In 2003, it was still owned by the Flood family.John King, the architecture critic of the San Francisco Chronicle, praised the Flood Building as "twelve stories of orderly pomp with a rounded prow that commands the corner of Powell and Market Streets... Every detail is rooted and right, from the tall storefronts that beckon cable car daytrippers to the baroque cliff of the sandstone façade with its deep-chiseled windows and just enough ornamentation to enliven the mass rather than clutter the scene."Take a look at our San Francisco trip itinerary planner to schedule your visit to The Flood Building and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.
The Flood Building Reviews
more »I went to May 2018. It is a massive building standing in front of the cable car station, right next to the Powell. There is a GAP on the first Floor. It has a slightly unusual shape like the isosceles triangle. It is surrounded by buildings and it is easy to overlook, but it is an old building with historical value.
In a generally low-rise city a 12 storey structure stands out and none more attractively than this lovely construct. Dating from 1904 it fortunately survived the 1906 quake and firestorms. Viewed from... more »
This building is one of the standing buildings that survived the 1906 earthquake. If you get a chance to see the interior marble, it's amazing to see it on this day in age where new buildings don't have this material anymore. The carvings on the columns make you feel you're back in a grandiose era. Currently, there are 4 windows showing the history of the Flood Building. It's worth reading it.
Beautiful place especially if you want to go shopping all brand name stores that I usually shop in, Kenneth Cole, Gap, Victoria's Secret and more. There's also the street cars my mom and I rode on one b/c it was on my mom's bucket list so we killed 2 birds with one stone lol excellent tourist attraction considering we were on vacation.
