Transamerica Pyramid, San Francisco

4.0
The Transamerica Pyramid at 600 Montgomery Street between Clay and Washington Streets in the Financial District of San Francisco, California, is a 48-story postmodern building and the second-tallest skyscraper in the San Francisco skyline. Its height will be surpassed by Salesforce Tower, currently under construction. The building no longer houses the headquarters of the Transamerica Corporation, which moved its U.S. headquarters to Baltimore, Maryland, but it is still associated with the company and is depicted in the company's logo. Designed by architect William Pereira and built by Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction Company, at 853ft, on completion in 1972 it was the eighth tallest building in the world.
The Transamerica building was commissioned by Transamerica CEO John (Jack) R. Beckett, with the claim that he wished to allow light in the street below. Built on the site of the historic Montgomery Block, it has a structural height of 853ft and has 48 floors of retail and office space.
Construction began in 1969 and finished in 1972, and was overseen by San Francisco-based contractor Dinwiddie Construction, now Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction Company. Transamerica moved its headquarters to the new building from across the street, where it had been based in a flatiron-shaped building now occupied by the Church of Scientology of San Francisco.

  • If the Empire State building is an icon of NYC, then the Transamerica Pyramid is undoubtedly that of San Francisco. In the morning, its tip is still in the fog and its silhouette stands out when observed from the sea. In the financial district a ten-minute walk from Embarcaderos.

  • Always fun with those buildings that stand out and make a cityscape unique, without for that matter being a sub in design or building technology. Really like that ' na buildings!

  • We regularly espied this grand and distinctive edifice as we walked around the city. We looked forward to visiting it. Dating from the early 1970s, it has an attention grabbing profile, towering into the skyline. It was interesting to learn that it was built on the site of Montgomery Block that in its time was a terminus of the Pony Express. After admiring the elegant facade features we stepped into the foyer. Some attractive artworks are to be viewed in addition to plaques to its antecedent.
  • This office building is an iconic member of the San Francisco skyline and as soon as you see it, you know where you are. I stayed just a few blocks from the Tower and used it as a landmark when I was exploring the city. So great to see it up close. the landmark of San Francisco is visible from a distance, and if you get closer it makes even a greater impression. Easily one of San Fransisco’s most distinguishable buildings, the Transamerica Pyramid can be seen for miles poking up above the Financial District. It is the second tallest skyscraper in the San Fransisco skyline.
