Tomb of Khai Dinh, Thua Thien - Hue Province

A lavish mausoleum of Vietnam's penultimate emperor, Tomb of Khai Dinh combines both Eastern and Western features. The dark concrete exterior with monumental elements contrasts with the colorful and elaborate Baroque interior. Started in 1920 and completed in 1931, six years after the emperor's death, this ornate hillside palace synthesizes the country's Chinese-style tradition and various European influences. Seated on a throne under a canopy meticulously decorated by fragments of ceramic and glass, a golden effigy of the emperor occupies the central position of the mausoleum's main hall. A collection of royal swords and daggers, urns, and personal belongings testifies to the emperor's uneasy life. Plan a trip to Hue easily and quickly by telling Inspirock to suggest an itinerary.

  • Entry fee is 100k dong but I think it's worth the price. The structure consists of three levels with a building on a final one. Every statue, relief or any other artwork is dedicated to the memory of the emperor. The amount and attention to detail in the interior is magnificent and I was amazed how much time and effort had to go into building this tomb. Despite all that it doesn't take very long to explore the whole place {around 20 minutes I would say) which was a refreshing change after spending hours walking around imperial city.
  • Very beautiful and distinct compared to the other temples in the other temples in the area. There are lots of stairs - good to note for those with children or the elderly. The temple at the top is spectacularly colourful compared to the sites on the way up. Glad we visited!
